Taylor’s image is everything to her. So despite wanting love, and wishing she could be a regular couple (to society’s standards, I don’t make the rules) Taylor needs to keep up appearances of representing an All-American Girl. Basically, this election result upsets the apply cart for Taylor and her girlfriend. There is more stigma of gays in general, so it’s not safe for Taylor to be openly sapphic. And this hurts her relationship by forcing it underground.
Taylor is assuring her queer audience that she stands with them. She doesn’t want to lose her gay fan base. Taylor has hope that someday queers will have equal rights.
