Taylor Swift Awakens from Comp Het [Queer Lyrical Easter Eggs- Pride 19]

 Everything has Changed:

I’m going to posit that this song is Taylor arousing from compulsive heterosexuality.

She contrasts this spark of attraction she’s never felt with how she felt before. She describes a gray, dreary, existence prior to feeling sunshine and butterflies with this person. It’s like screaming color. Stepping into the daylight.

All I knew

This morning when I woke

Is I know something now

Know something now I didn't before

She has had a realization. Taylor is really good at building plausible deniability into her songs. So this could simply be discovering a regular crush. I hope to convince you Taylor has had a much bigger realization that comes with this specific crush–she’s sapphic (I use that bc I don’t know what label she identifies as).

Is green eyes and freckles and your smile

In the back of my mind making me feel like

I just wanna know you better

Green eyes make an appearance in Taylor’s catalog four to five times:

1. Sparks Fly [Speak Now, 2010]-

We can all agree going up the staircase, running fingers through hair, and seeing lights go wild is sexy-times, right? This is not a friend stanza. Taylor is feeling attraction to this person.

2. Everything has changed [Red, 2012]

The lyrics above about green eyes and freckles

3. Wonderland [1989, 2014]

See the prior post ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ for more on this.

4. I Know Places [1989, 2014]

A song about hiding out with your green-eyed love to avoid prying eyes and media speculation.

Maybe 5. +/- Snow on the Beach [Midnights, ]

Is Taylor describing the location of the beach? The location of the date? Or is she comparing someone’s eyes to the Northern Lights? Or braided, so all of those?

Supporting evidence for eyes is the lyric /… lit from within/ to be similar to the saying “eyes are the windows of the soul” and the mention of periphery right after, which could conjure peripheral vision. Then later, Taylor directly mentions this person’s eyes are otherworldly/drugged-up.

The words planet/Saturn.  proclaim how extraordinary this person makes Taylor feel.  Taylor’s love feels enormous and vast to her. Referencing outerspace also shows this love is inaccessible, removed, or futile. Why would it be difficult to start a relationship with a man? What is out of reach or unbelievable about a crush on a dude? I think the disbelief, excitement, and worry in SOTB and this song show this relationship is more fraught than a Ken-crush. Taylor is having feelings for a woman.

Further Proof:  Now, who could Taylor be talking about in the green-eyed lyrics?

The official dating timeline during the years in question-

Brown Blue

I’d say hazel, bc 3 out of the 4 look more brown, but here’s several pics so you decide.

I’d say “gray” would be the best description bc Harry’s eyes look different in every single pic. But maybe green, and some blue contact moments?

Not really any good fits for the green-eyed muse that work in the timeline.

BUT

green

Taylor and Ed have described writing the song in May 2012 when Taylor didn’t meet Connor Kennedy until July 2012. And Harry was even after that. But we have three female possibilities with green eyes…

The manners of /held the door/ remind me of-

It also reminds me of Other Side of the Door

It also reminds me of:

Mary’s Song, Our Song, You Belong with me, When Emma Falls in Love, The Moment I Knew, How You Get the Girl, Say Don’t Go, Exile, August, Betty, Hoax, Paris, Hits Different.

You can see by the titles these are all songs that can easily be interpreted through a queer lens. Lyrics that evoke a hiding, lonely, ostracized, fearful, existence. It’s giving closeted. Or braving venturing out of the closet.

Someone opened her eyes in Everything has Changed and she felt passionate/invigorated, and more open than she had prior to that moment. Taylor is illustrating the contrast between this sublime and ethereal state and her previous condition.

Painting blue and walls in other songs:

Cold as You-

Change-

Long Live-

Enchanted-

The Story of Us-

Castles Crumbling-

I Don’t Wanna Live Forever-

The Great War

All the walls give the feelings of closed off, hopeless, or trapped. And that also seems like something a closeted gay person might experience.

Dear John-

Dancing with Our Hands Tied-

The songs that have “paint” show that Taylor’s world lit up when she really felt love (instead of comp-het).  Taylor confirms this sentiment in Dancing with our Hands Tied when she describes being deeply depressed until this new, real love paints her golden.

Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince-

The 1-

Taylor offhandedly mentions her and her love never painted by the numbers.  She’s framing their relationship as “different” “weird” which shows society’s sentiment about homosexual love, as well as her own internal homophobia and fear of being outed.  BUT something awoke in Taylor, even if she’s afraid of it.

Peace-

Hoax-

Coney Island-

There are forces at work in these songs that are more than just getting in, being in, and staying in a heteronormative relationship. What is all the strife? The fear? The stigma? These feelings don’t make sense with a man. These songs are so much more intense and distressing because the couple is fighting against systemic systems of oppression.

But Everything has Changed is almost a twin to the unreleased song Crazier [2009]

The gist of both songs are that Taylor had an awakening that made her very happy. And this awakening also gave her the realization that she hadn’t really felt like this in the past.

And the fear that she is reading into things, or the other person isn’t into it, or that Taylor has imagined this connection and attraction also speaks to heteronormativity. Taylor is more tentative and cautious because she wants to make sure, sure that she is interpreting this situation accurately. This girl is attracted to her in that way. Which isn’t as much of a concern in a straight relationship.

Everything has Changed is a song about a same sex crush that rocks Taylor’s world, and wakes her up because it’s the realization she is queer.
