Taylor wants us to really take in the lyrics. She wants us to listen and absorb them, read them for double-meanings. Taylor is asking us to notice the subtext and pick up the subtle. Here are several clips where Taylor talks about the importance of her lyrics:
And it's not just little letters, or a thread throughout 3 songs that she feeds us. Taylor is trying to get across that sometimes the obvious isn't the primary meaning of a song. Sometimes Taylor writes or points to something obvious to obscure, the actual meaning hidden within. She wants us to look closely and think about how to put it all together.
And this interview shows Taylor will obfuscate the lyrics:
She is strongly picturing something on the board, but hidden within the obvious is something more obscure [the gay a lot of times]!
So during this pride month we're going to look at many of Taylor's songs and how she may have hidden the queerness of them under the obvious public narrative.
