Buying a House: Inspection [2]

One of the biggest must-haves was for it to pass inspection.

Ours did. Though there was a whole big thing with the insulation. It had been thin to non-existent. Which wouldn’t work in any scenario, but especially won’t work because I am adamant about minimizing how much money we give to monopoly corporations. But the current owner was having a hard time getting it scheduled. The company was booked out pretty far. But also the next house the owners wanted to buy was contingent on the sale of our house. So our closing could NOT be pushed out past a certain date. But also, you have contracts and money dealings, so things have to be done by closing so things are ensured to be done. There was a lot of back and fourth, and we signed about a million addendums to this inspection correction contract before our real estate agent suggested that the current owner just get a money order for the price of the insulation and we would schedule the install ourselves. And there are so many moving parts to buying a house, that worn down, we just agreed. Whatever.

The insulation company was hard to contact. Cool would call, leave a message–not hear back. She would call again, talk to some receptionist who said so-and-so in charge wasn’t in to approve, but she’d pass on our message so they could call back. No one would call. Rinse, repeat. For months.

At the same time, we were replacing the windows in here. And the window salesman just happened to have previously worked for the insulation company! He finally cleared up the mystery of the ghosting insulation company by saying they were organized into regions/branches, and the one we were calling (located 30 min away) dealt only with Michigan, not our state. We needed to call the one an hour away because that was who did our region. Like, nobody could have said that? No one could have transferred us? Or given us the different number? What the fuck? What is wrong with people???

So we finally got ahold of the correct branch of this company and they said our money order was for some weird amount. And they couldn’t accept money orders from somebody else? IDK. We literally had to drive an hour and a half to the town the former owner had moved to (luckily they had been nice) and have him write a check out to us. It was a whole big thing.

But we did end up getting maximum thickness of insulation in the attic, and additionally we got the new fancy insulation composite in our walls.
