Between 1995 and 2005 (during my peak adolescent period), more than 80 movies classified as “romantic comedies” hit U.S. box offices.
The “era of the romantic comedy” typically refers to the 20-year period from 1990 to 2010, when rom-coms ate up box office profits and dominated the cultural scene. These blockbuster successes include, among others, a litany of titles you’ve probably binge-watched on weekends growing up.
I'm not saying Hollywood is out to make Stepford Wives. But I am saying, media is not taking the time to analyze, and critically look at dominant power structures in order to subvert them. Film-makers want to make the most money possible. As part of that goal, they will attempt to produce the most palatable situation to the target audience (ie, those with the money). And that's White women between 25 and 39 years old according to the following data (sources at the end of the post):
