Ron Burkle acquired a majority stake in Soho House in 2012-

You'll see in a minute why Ron Burkle is important to our story.

His Sunset Boulevard office was once home to David Geffen’s production company, and Howard Hughes used to frequent the screening room there. He hangs out with musicians and celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Madonna. He has dated models and he invested in a modeling agency. He is also an owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team and of London-based Independent Talent Group, which some call “the CAA of Europe.”

During the 1990s, Burkle—a prominent Democratic fundraiser—became close with President Bill Clinton (so close that Clinton reportedly had a bedroom in Burkle’s mansion). Clinton and Burkle also notoriously jetted around the world together, alongside a flock of young women, on the financier’s Boeing 787 (which Burkle’s young aides reportedly privately referred to as “Air F--- One”).

One of their voyages, purportedly a mission to explore the problems of AIDS and economic development in Africa, was on child-sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s private Boeing 727. Court documents show that Epstein flew not just President Clinton and supermarket magnate Ron Burkle, but actors Chris Tucker and Kevin Spacey, Lew Wasserman’s grandson, Casey Wasserman, and a few others.

In 2003, Burkle injected $100 million into Diddy’s fashion brand Sean John. Burkle is also reportedly the godfather of Diddy’s children.

Another of Burkle’s big-name friends was the “King of Pop,” Michael Jackson. Burkle even purchased Jackson’s famous California Neverland Ranch for $22 million in 2020.

In 2010, Burkle may have teamed up with Weinstein associates on a bid to buy back Harvey and Bob Weinstein’s onetime studio Miramax Films. Burkle made a bid about $100 million more than the second-highest bidder for the beleaguered, post-#metoo, Weinstein Co.

His schtick was to install a female-led board. According to Eric Schneiderman, the New York attorney general, Burkle attempted to make the veteran Weinstein executive, David Glasser, his CEO. There goes the female-led charade. Glasser had been accused of enabling Harvey Weinstein’s abuses.

The sale was shut down, because as Schneiderman put it at a press conference, Glasser is not a woman. Schneiderman insisted that he not be allowed to run the new company. Though the sale did not go through, Burke and Weinstein remained friendly. They traveled to Cannes together.

Burkle ended up investing in a dozen or so Weinstein Co. films. His son works for the Weinstein Co.-- in acquisitions. This all led to suspicion, when Burkle made his bid for the Weinstein Co., that Harvey Weinstein was somehow behind it.
