ViKtim asked if I wanted to come out in the yard and have a glass of red wine and chat--she tried to sound casual. The evident worry and wine were mutually helpful in getting ViKtim to open up to me--which happened only rarely.
Over the wine ViKtim told me of past transgressions where MiNarc left the town's big parade and festival with The Hairdresser to ostensibly "check on the hospital."
ViKtim had been brought to MiNarc’s (homophobic) hometown where everyone knew MiNarc and nobody knew ViKtim. She was states away from her entire family and all of her friends. MiNarc had her family, best friend, acquaintances, schoolmates, neighbors, and family friends in the immediate vicinity. ViKtim had nobody but MiNarc and any of MiNarc’s friends that she approved ViKtim to see. But ViKtim was affable so she made new friends at work (MiNarc’s business). Because of course, when MiNarc got her own business she needed help and it was decided that the completely inexperienced ViKtim would become a key employee in order to help out. But MiNarc balked at her wife bridging the wide gap between their closeted personal and professional lives, and gave the edict that ViKtim was not allowed to befriend employees/coworkers.
ViKtim became close to one of MiNarc’s employees anyway, but it was always a bone of contention, and MiNarc stood in the way of that when she could. So for those keeping track: ViKtim had been removed from her home town/state and comfort zone, away from family, friends, hobbies. She worked for MiNarc so therefore her finances were dependent on MiNarc too. And not only did she not know anyone in MiNarc’s hometown, and had to remain closeted, pretending to be a silent friend of MiNarc’s, but she wasn’t allowed to befriend the people she saw most often. Of course ViKtim took up drinking and gambling–what else did she have?
