Her dad, Kurt, is an emergency room doctor and her mum, Tracy, is a graphic artist who battled a very aggressive form of breast cancer while Karlie was growing up.

This might go some way to explaining Karlie’s caring nature and maturity (and the fact that she clears all the plates away on our table before we leave the cafe). I also learn that she loves puppies, and hates wasting food, insisting on taking my half-eaten avocado toast and her cold undrunk coffee home in a paper bag.

It might not surprise you to learn that before we even start talking, I’m entirely won over by all 6ft 2in of her. But as much as I’m a sucker for a beautiful girl in tight › (Frame) jeans, knee-high (Stuart Weitzman) boots and a figure-hugging Alexander Wang sweater, I’m also, ahem *gathers self*, a highly professional journalist. So as I stare into her deep green/grey eyes (stop it!), I ask her to explain to me once and for all what coding actually is because I hate to admit that I’m not sure I get it. ‘OK, so code is the language that writes the technology that we interact with,’ she explains between mouthfuls of scrambled egg whites. ‘It’s how computers understand commands and directions.

‘Every device speaks this language and understanding it means you can build something that reaches many people. It doesn’t matter if you want to work in fashion or start a non-profit. With the ability to code you can problem solve in a really powerful way. Every industry is being transformed by technology and you either adapt or get left behind. So I think why coding has grown to be so powerful, especially for young women, is that it gives you the understanding and the skills to be a part of the change and a part of writing the future.’

She is actively involved with organizations like Feeding America, supporting hunger relief efforts-

Known for her commitment to education and women's empowerment, she founded the organization Kode with Klossy in 2015-

This nonprofit initiative offers free coding scholarships and summer camps to young girls, aiming to bridge the gender gap in technology and provide opportunities for future female leaders in the industry.

According to Kloss, many of her scholars focus their coding talents on social impact and effecting change in their communities. Kloss says one of her 12,000 alumni created an app designed to provide resources for victims of sexual assault. Another produced a way to find safe running routes around her neighborhood, solving a problem for herself and her broader community. Some of her scholars have even won Apple's Swift Student Challenge.

She has also served as an ambassador for various causes like maternal health and education. and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), where she serves as a board member and collaborates on initiatives promoting inclusivity and diversity within the fashion industry.

Abortion Advocacy-

“I'm one of four daughters. I grew up here in the Midwest. My father is a physician. The idea of reproductive care was never political in my house,” Kloss said. “It's devastating to me the reality of what is happening and how it has become so politicized. Because to me, this is a conversation that belongs between an individual and their physician and an individual and their loved ones. To me, politicians should not be involved.”

Kloss helped gather signatures in Creve Coeur for the Missourians for Constitutional Freedom initiative, a measure that would legalize the procedure up to what’s known as fetal viability. That’s defined in the initiative as when medical professionals determine that a fetus could survive outside of the womb without extraordinary medical intervention.

Before Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, Kloss started the Gateway Coalition, which provides financial and logistical assistance to small clinics that provide abortions throughout the Midwest. She said those facilities, particularly the ones in Illinois, have become havens for people in states like Missouri where most abortions are prohibited. “What I really realized, especially once Roe fell, was about the fragmentation of care across this country, but specifically in the Midwest,” Kloss said. “I wanted to do whatever I could, and initially focused on Illinois of just the infrastructure that exists — the independent clinics, the clinics across Illinois who are really holding up the front line.”

She called the Missourians for Constitutional Freedom initiative “an opportunity to take it to the ballot box and actually have Missourians reinstall protections in our home state.” “So you don't have to leave Missouri to receive just the vital care that I believe every woman deserves,” Kloss said.
