“We finally find acceptance and can start moving forward from loss or heartbreak… These songs represent making room for more good in your life, making that choice, because a lot of times when we lose things we gain things, too.”

Self-Titled-
I’m Only Me When I’m With You
Sometimes we don't say a thing/Just listen to the crickets sing
Everything I need is right here by my side
It's calm and comfortable with this person.
And I know everything about you/I don't wanna live without you
Taylor is intimately acquainted with this person. And even knowing everything about them doesn't dissuade her from wanting to be with them.
Just a small-town boy and girl
Living in the crazy world
Trying to figure out what is and isn't true
And I don't try to hide my tears
My secrets or my deepest fears
Taylor is totally herself. She's accepted this other person, accepted who she is, and accepted who they are together. She's comfortable with the relationship, and not trying to hide things, or change things.
Through it all nobody gets me like you do
And you know everything about me
You say that you can't live without me
When I'm with anybody else
It's so hard to be myself
And only you can tell
The other half I'm only trying
To let you know that what I feel is true
And I'm only me
Who I wanna be
Well, I'm only me when I'm with you
She’s doubling-down on her comfort in this relationship. She doesn’t care what society thinks. Taylor is at ease--a rarity for her. She can be herself around this person.
Stay Beautiful
Cory finds another way to be/The highlight of my day
I'm taking pictures in my mind/So I can save them for a rainy day
Taylor really likes Cory. But also she's settled into the notion that if it doesn't work out she will have the memories to look at one day.
If you and I are a story
That never gets told
If what you are is a daydream
I'll never get to hold, at least you'll know
You're beautiful
It's one of the rare times when things probably aren't going to go how Taylor wishes they would go AND she's wishing the other person well. She shows a lot of maturity saying if her and Cory never get to date, she hopes they know their value and their life goes well.
And when you find everything you've looked for
I hope your love leads you back to my front door
Oh, but if it don't
Will you stay beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Taylor seems settled in the fact this girl is never going to be with her. She might have been heartbroken but she's clear-headed enough in the situation that as she is able to express admiration for them.
A Place in this World
I don't know what I want/...'Cause I'm still trying, to figure it out
Don't know what's down, this road/I'm just walking
Taylor doesn't know exactly what she wants or where she belongs but she doesn't sound upset or discouraged-just matter of fact.
Feeling lucky today, got the sunshine/Could you tell me what more do I need?
And tomorrow's just a mystery/Oh yeah, but that's okay
These lines continue with the uncertainty but take on an optimistic tone.
I'm alone, on my own
And that's all I know
I'll be strong, I'll be wrong
Oh, but life goes on
Oh, I'm just a girl
Trying to find a place, in this world
It might be in the running for top 5 of Taylor's most mature lyrics/sentiments. She acknowledges she's on her own. But says it's what she's used to and she'll persevere. Taylor says she might be wrong, but she's also not upset by that. She says a casual 'life goes on' about it. She's just trying to grow up and find herself and that's ok with her.
Maybe I'm just a girl on a mission/But I'm ready to fly
Taylor is ready to pursue her career wholeheartedly. She's ready to be independent and prepared for the challenge.
I'm alone, on my own/And that's all I know
Oh, I'll be strong, I'll be wrong
Oh, but life goes on
Oh, I'm alone, on my own/And that's all I know
Oh, I'm just a girl
Trying to find a place, in this world
APITW walked so YOYOK could run. Taylor has a lot of questions about where she belongs, but in the end accepts that she’s on her own.
It's funny, Reputation is later in the catalog, but there's regression in terms of acceptance. Throughout Reputation, Taylor is struggling to finagle things into place as she wishes they would be. And she is bargaining as part of putting things into the order she prefers. Reality is not at the forefront of that album. The rest of the album is full of anger and resentment. I couldn't find any songs that would fit under acceptance for Reputation.
