Candy Grams: A Popularity Contest [3]

Doesn't it hurt your heart to think that our boys at some point will feel excluded from friends or left out? Why do they start competition things like that from such a young age? I remember something similar happening at Valentines Day when I was in junior high and I so desperately wanted one too! I wish that feelings like this never had to happen to any child, period!

It's like we have parallel lives! Those always made my stomach hurt in school. A glaring reminder my peers didn't accept me. When my kids were starting to get these I did the same thing you're doing, every single kid gets one EVERY SINGLE TIME! I don't get it.

I mean how much more mean girls can it get? It's just another ridiculous social event that will make people feel inferior, insecure, and inadequate. I mean fuck if I was still a new girl, or at my old school I'd feel like shit not getting one. I intend to tell my boyfriend not to send me one, but to send it to a random sophomore instead.

Naomi Eisenberger, PhD, at the University of California, Los Angeles, Kipling Williams, PhD, at Purdue University, and colleagues found that social rejection activates many of the same brain regions involved in physical pain (Science, 2003) (6).

This seems pretty harmless, but in reality, it helps all students notice who is popular and who isn’t…
